Ueno Daibutsu (Great Buddha)
Popular with students who come to pray for success in their examinations.
After its construction in 1631, the statue was damaged due to numerous earthquakes and fires. Although it was initially repaired, the statue was damaged again due to the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and was stored inside Kaneiji Temple without being reparied. However, in 1972, just the face was returned to its original location. Students come to pray for success in their examinations because the statue overcame many difficulties and has nothing left to lose.
