The Clock Tower was originally conceived as a performance hall for the Sapporo Agricultural College by founding vice-principal William Smith Clark and built in 1878. It has been designated as an important cultural asset of Japan due to it’s characteristic wooden architectural style influenced by the airship construction of the pioneering period American Mid-West. Inside where he was stationed, there is also a famous commemorative photo of Vice-Principal Clark sat upon an ottoman.
